Since we’re comparing many different leagues and levels of competition in this list, here are a few aspects that we’re taking into consideration for our power rankings:
- Current Form
- Current League Position
- Tournament Play
- and lastly, our opinions
With that being said, here are the rankings:
1. Real Madrid
Now this was a close race, but Real wins the battle for our top spot. Leaders of La Liga and second place in their Champions League group, Madrid haven’t lost yet this season in all competitions. However, with draws against pesky Borussia Dortmund and Legia Warszawa, a team they beat 5-1 already this season, Madrid will be looking to find better form in the Champions League if they wish to be the first back-to-back winners in the tournament.
2. Bayern Munich
The Bundesliga giants are next in our list, and with only one loss and three draws this season, how could they not be? Joint top of their league table and sitting second only to their Champions League rivals Atletico Madrid in their group, Bayern look set for another trophy filled season. After a drawing an in form Hoffenheim team, Bayern have a huge league fixture against their biggest Bundesliga rivals(maybe not this year!) Borussia Dortmund coming up next.
In 3rd place in our rankings comes the Old Lady. Leading Serie A and holding down second in their Champions League group(I sense a trend here), Juventus can beat any team in the world on their day. Two losses to the Milan teams have the rest of Serie A hoping they can capitalize on Juve’s irregular league results, but they don’t stand a chance…or do they?
4. RassenBallsport Leipzig
It’s the first surprise of the rankings! Haven’t heard of this team? I don’t blame you, but you’ll know them after this season. RB Leipzig have been sensational this season in their first Bundesliga campaign. Sitting joint top with Bayern, RB Leipzig have earned impressive wins against Borussia Dortmund and at Wolfsburg. Led by four goal and four assist man Emil Forsberg, RB Leipzig look to keep the big guns in Germany sweating, but how long can the Leicester City-esc magic continue?
The first English team on our list, Liverpool are in some insane form. Taking 16 out of a possible 18 points in their last six league games, The Reds now sit alone on top of the Premier League table. Scoring 10 in their last two games and only with one loss this year, Jurgen Klopp’s men look to make the run for Champions League spots, and the title, interesting.
The hottest team in Italy, Roma are having a great year so far. Second in Serie A and leading their Europa League group(unfortunately losing their Champions League qualifier however), Roma look to be Juventus’ closest competitors in the league this year. They haven’t lost since September, only drawing twice in that time span. Roma could be winning a trophy of two by the time the season is over, we’re calling it here.
7. OSG Nice
Another surprise! Ligue 1 leaders are next on our list, and how couldn’t they be? Having only lost their first game in the league over the weekend, Nice are above French heavyweights PSG and Monaco, with the later taking a 4-0 loss against Nice earlier this year. Although their Europa League form is poor, full-focus is on the league, and if they continue their run, they could win it all!
What a roller coaster ride it must be to be a Chelsea fan. Winning the league in 2014-15 to sacking Jose Mourinho and not qualifying for the Champions League was one of the surprises of last season. They have been in and out of form this year too, but they currently look impressive. Only giving three goals in their last six games, Chelsea sit second in the Premier League. Of course having no outside tournament distractions(getting knocked out of the EFL Cup by West Ham) helps, but this team looks like a title favorite at the moment.
9. Newcastle United
We now come to the hottest team in the world, Newcastle! Winners of their past eight games, Newcastle look set to climb right back into the Premier League after being relegated last season. Led by Rafa Benitez and the red-hot Dwight Gayle, No one in the Championship, or the Premier League, would want to face them right now.
10. Toronto FC
Whattt?! An MLS team in our World Power Rankings?! You better believe it! The MLS Cup playoffs are in full-swing, and there is no hotter team than Toronto. Winners of the first-round game against the Philadelphia Union, they went on to thrash New York City FC 7-0 on aggregate over two legs. They play the Montreal Impact in the Eastern Conference Semifinals, and in the form they are in, they have their sights on the cup.
