Ahh the holidays. Time to wrap presents, put on that ugly sweater, and of course, watch some Christmas movies! Now I know there are hundreds to choose from, and you’re probably thinking, “James, where do I begin?” Well don’t worry kids, I got you covered.
Now before I get into to my list, let’s go over the different types of Christmas movies. There’s the holiday classics, the heartfelt, “Hallmark” stories, the children’s movies, and the Christmas comedies. Each category has their successes and flops, so I’m here to point you in the right direction. Without further ado, here are my top 5 Christmas movies, including trailers!
5) A Charlie Brown Christmas
Starting my list off is one of the best Peanuts short-films ever made. In this story, everyone’s favorite awkward kid, Charlie Brown, is feeling down during the holidays. He takes charge of the local Christmas play in hopes of raising his spirits. All the kids question Charlie Brown’s methods and views toward the holidays, but he eventually shows the group the true meaning of Christmas.
4) How the Grinch Stole Christmas!
Next on my list is another short-film, but this time from the imaginative and fun mind of Dr. Suess. How the Grinch Stole Christmas! is the classic animated story of how a grumpy, green hermit plots to steal Christmas from the Whos down in Whoville. This selection is the original Grinch movie, not the Jim Carrey live-action 2000 film. That one is good, but not even comparable to this classic.
3) Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer
The third movie on my list is the story behind one of the most beloved Christmas characters, Rudolph. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer is the oldest movie on this list, released in 1964, but it’s one of the best. It follows the life of a young, ambitious reindeer with a special gift. Throw in other great characters like the crazy prospector Yukon Cornelius, the misfit elf Hermey, and the movie’s narrator Sam the Snowman, voiced by the great Burl Ives, and you have an instant Christmas classic.
2) A Christmas Story
My runner-up, and the first non-animated movie on my list, is the 1963 comedy, A Christmas Story. The movie follows young Ralphie Parker as he goes to school before Christmas break, deals with his nutty family, and dreams of receiving the perfect gift on Christmas morning: a Red Ryder B.B. Gun. If you’ve never seen it before, you’ll have your chance on Christmas Day because it plays on TBS for 24 straight hours.
1) National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation
Here it is, my favorite Christmas movie, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation! This hilarious movie, released in 1989, tells the tale of Clark Griswold, played by funny man Chevy Chase, and his mission to have the perfect family Christmas. However, problems at work, surprise visitors, and electrical problems cause Clark to lose his mind. I’ve seen this movie a hundred times and it still brings me to tears from laughing so hard.
Well there you have it. What do you think of my top 5 favorite Christmas movies? Did I leave out some of your favorite movies? Let me know in the comments below.
Until next time, Merry Christmas, and remember:
